Each summer for the last seventeen years, the ACC Chicago Diversity Summer Internship Program (the “Program”) has placed a select group of diverse first year law students from Illinois law schools in internships with Chicagoland corporate legal departments. For the summer of 2021, despite the global COVID-19 pandemic, the ACC Chicago Diversity Summer Internship Committee is proceeding with the Program. The Program will be a combination of in-person and virtual with student safety as its number one priority.
The Program consists of four main components: (1) the corporate in-house internship, (2) robust mentorship through interactive programming, (3) network building, and (4) volunteering. In addition, students are provided a $9,000 stipend to work for a minimum of ten (10) weeks during the summer.
Each intern will be assigned to work in the legal department of a Chicago area company, where they may perform a variety of tasks, including legal research, memo writing, contract drafting, attending internal and external meetings, and generally experiencing what in-house attorneys do on a day-to-day basis.
The programming portion of the internship includes attendance at several evening group events (attended by all interns, mentors, corporate hosts, and other in-house lawyers). Programs include a resume writing and interview workshop, a networking workshop, a volunteer event, and other social and educational networking events. In addition, each intern will be assigned two mentors – a lawyer within their host legal department and a lawyer from the ACC Chicago Chapter.
The Program offer its interns the opportunity to meet and network with their future peers, including current in-house counsel, ACC Chicago Chapter members, and attorneys from various law firms throughout the Chicagoland area. Social outings and other substantive programs provide ample time and a unique opportunity for interns, hosts, and mentors to get to know each other. As such, mandatory attendance is required for each event.
The final element of the Program includes an event where interns, committee members, and ACC Chicago Chapter members volunteer at a local charity.
The Chicago Chapter of ACC looked for students from diverse backgrounds that are traditionally underrepresented in the legal profession. Additionally, the Chapter seeks students who are eager to learn and are capable of thriving in a corporate environment.
Requirements (no exceptions):
- Currently enrolled in an Illinois law school
- Only open to first year law students (1Ls)
For the summer of 2021, the deadline to submit was 11:59pm on January 8, 2021.
CORPORATE HOST OPPORTUNITY
The Chapter extended an invitation, via email, to member companies to participate as intern hosts in the Diversity Summer Internship Program. The success of the program has led to increased visibility in and among the Chicago legal community and beyond and corporate interest in participating has never been higher. All interested students are required to submit an application, resume and essays as well as undergo extensive interviews with members of the ACC Chicago Chapter.
We are very proud of this program and the success it has brought to many students who would otherwise have had no opportunity to work in the in-house community and gain valuable hands-on experience in addition to receiving invaluable career advice from seasoned veterans.
Corporate Host and Student matches have been finalized for 2021.
